Who We Are
Strain Measurement Devices (SMD) designs and manufactures miniature OEM sensors for the world's most demanding applications — from IV infusion pumps and bioreactors to directional drilling tools and satellite structures.
Contact Our Engineering TeamOur Approach
Since our founding, SMD has operated as a custom sensor engineering company. Standard catalog products are a starting point — the real value is adapting them to the precise mechanical, thermal, and electrical requirements of your OEM design.
SMD pioneered sputtered thin-film strain gauge technology for OEM sensing. Unlike bonded foil gauges, thin-film elements are deposited directly onto the sensor substrate — eliminating adhesive creep, improving long-term stability, and enabling sterilization compatibility.
With manufacturing in Milford, Connecticut (USA) and Basingstoke, Hampshire (UK), we serve OEM customers across 30+ countries. Every project is supported directly by our applications engineers — not a distributor.
Many of our customer relationships span decades. We work at the early design phase — when sensor geometry, output, and performance can still be optimized — and stay engaged through production lifecycle changes.

History
Founded in Hamden, Connecticut as Strain Measurement Devices. Early focus on miniature load cells for medical and industrial OEM applications.
Pioneered sputtered thin-film strain gauge technology for OEM sensors — delivering superior stability compared to bonded foil alternatives.
Expanded into ultrasonic bubble detection with the first generation of air-in-line sensors for IV infusion pump OEMs.
ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 dual certification achieved, enabling deeper partnerships with medical device OEMs in the USA and Europe.
SMD UK facility in Basingstoke certified, enabling full dual-continent manufacturing and supply chain resilience for global OEM customers.
Continued expansion in biopharmaceutical, semiconductor, and advanced industrial robotics sectors. Digital signal conditioning and USB output products launched.
